Driving With No Insurance Penalties Are Not a Strong Deterrant
The ABI (Association of British Insurers) claim that the penalties imposed on those willing to drive vehicles lacking car insurance are not a strong deterrant and the fines handed out to uninsured drivers are not inkeeping with the seriousness of the crime.
ABI spokesperson, Malcolm Tarling said “In many cases the fine is less than the cost of insurance but there are far more effective penalties like taking away the vehicle and crushing it”.
Drivers that are not insured can only be removed from the roads if their vehicle is confiscated.
Tarling also stated that although fines play a good part in the crackdown on those who still drive uninsured, it is not a complete solution. A survey by the Department of Transport has shown that the number of uninsured drivers being stopped by police has reduced by 0.7% since 2006.
