How Uninsured Motorists Cost Car Insurance Premiums?
The Motor Insurer’s Bureau (MIB) has revealed that the number of motorists driving on the UK roads without insurance has decreased from last year by 20 per cent. Last year, the figure for uninsured drivers was 1.8 million as compared to 1.5 million of the current year.
Some of the areas in the UK that have the largest number of uninsured motorists include Greater Manchester, BD3, B10, M12, B12, West Yorkshire and Bradford. The research revealed that about 160 people are killed in accidents caused by uninsured drivers and 23,000 people suffer minor to severe injuries.
The insurance companies are obliged to pay about £500 million annually for people suffering because of uninsured drivers. This annual bill affects the cost of the car insurance premium for the insured car owners.
The chief executive of MIB has stated that due to strained economic conditions, things have become extremely constrained for most of the households but one is bound to follow the UK law that says that every car requires car insurance on the roads.
Uninsured driving in the UK is a severe offence and can result in disqualification by imposing driving ban of about 28 days and perhaps longer for repeated offences. For drivers who have been caught for the first time for uninsured driving, there would be no ban but a penalty between six to eight points. Uninsured drivers can be charged fine depending on whether the uninsured owner was driving the car or had permitted someone else. Several researches reveal that uninsured motorists enforce several other burdens on the society. Uninsured drivers are most likely to cause accidents, skip traffic signals, and sign boards. Surveys reveal that many uninsured motorists are involved in some form of criminal activities.
